Outlet or second hand? Which will work better in your store?

If you are considering opening your own clothing store, you are probably wondering: “Should I go for second-hand or outlet clothing?” This is a dilemma that many entrepreneurs face. In order to make the right decision, it is worth first analyzing a few key issues that can help you choose and match your product range to the real needs of the market.

Characteristics of local customers

The first thing to consider is the profile of the residents in the area where you plan to start your business. Customers of outlets and second-hand stores often have similar expectations – they are looking for good quality clothes at an affordable price. The difference is that outlet clothing is usually new and more expensive, while second-hand clothing is cheaper but used. Therefore, it is worth considering the financial situation of potential customers within a radius of several kilometers from the store.

If people accustomed to prices of PLN 5-10 per item dominate, a better solution would be to focus on unsorted second-hand clothing. However, if your future customers can afford to spend 20–30 PLN for one item, it is worth introducing new outlet clothing to the offer. Combining both types of assortment may prove to be a bull’s eye – everyone will find something for themselves.

Analysis of the competition in the region

The second important factor to consider is the presence of competition. If there are already several second-hand stores in the area, it does not mean that it is not worth entering this market – quite the opposite. A large number of similar stores may indicate a demand for this type of assortment. At the same time, if there are no outlet clothing stores nearby, it may mean a niche that is worth filling.

Remember also that you can outdo your competition not only in price, but also in the quality of service, unique assortment and attractive interior of the store. Even in a town with a large saturation of similar premises, a properly planned offer can attract customers.

Your approach to the goods you sell

Although it may seem less important, a very important aspect is the personal approach of the owner and team to the type of clothing offered. Working with products that we like and value ourselves brings greater satisfaction and translates into better contact with the customer. If you feel better selling fashionable clothes with a tag, and you do not necessarily want to sort used clothes, an outlet may be a better choice.

On the other hand, it is not worth closing yourself off to any option – what seems less attractive to us may be a hit in the eyes of the customer. Therefore, it is worth constantly observing what sells best and constantly adapting the offer to the needs of the local market.
